Life Issues and Maryland General Assembly

The Maryland General Assembly has proposed several bills this legislative session to expand abortion. Most serious among them is a constitutional amendment that would enshrine abortion in Maryland’s Constitution. Please make your voice heard. Sign up with the Catholic Advocacy Network (www.mdcatholic.org/joincan) of the Maryland Catholic Conference. This is the best way to let our elected officials know that you oppose their efforts to expand abortion services in Maryland.

As a society we are broken when a response to any pregnancy is fear rather than joy. Our society must do better to walk with mothers in need and to help break down economic, social, racial, employment and emotional barriers that lead mothers into thinking abortion is the only option.  As Pope Francis reminds us, “All life has inestimable value even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor….they deserve the utmost reverence and respect.”

Intercessions

For young mothers who are afraid or alone: That the blessed Virgin of Nazareth might strengthen them through her example and intercede for them with her prayers; We pray to the Lord

For our nation, our State, and our lawmakers: That we may continually strive for laws that lead our country towards blessedness and remind us of our necessary reliance on and trust in God; We pray to the Lord

For those suffering after abortion: may they find healing and peace through God’s limitless mercy; We pray to the Lord

For all Christians: Through the eyes of faith, may we see and treat each other as masterpieces of God’s creation; We pray to the Lord

For public servants: May God grant them the humility, wisdom, and courage to defend all human life; We pray to the Lord

May we follow Jesus’s example of humbly serving others at every stage and in every circumstance of life; We pray to the Lord

May we know God as our loving Father and always give thanks for the gift of our lives; We pray to the Lord

May we live out our baptismal call to proclaim the Gospel and be messengers of God’s love for every human life; We pray to the Lord

For civic leaders: That by their words and actions, they might work to preserve respect for the life of every human being; We pray to the Lord

Inspired by the example of the Blessed Mother, may we, like Mary, have the courage to say “yes” to life in all circumstances, from conception to natural death; We pray to the Lord

May any mother facing an unexpected pregnancy be lovingly accompanied as she prepares to encounter Christ anew through the gift of her child; We pray to the Lord

Quotes for Communications and Social Media

“Human life must always be defended from its beginning in the womb and must be recognized as a gift of God that guarantees the future of humanity.” -Pope Francis, National Family Week, August 6, 2013

“Don’t forget that He whom the whole universe cannot contain, was "hidden" in the womb of the Holy Virgin for nine months. Once you realize this, you will be awe-filled for the double mystery that God has confided to you: to conceive a human being made to God’s image and likeness, and to give birth to him…” — Alice von Hildebrand, Philosopher, Letter to a Young Girl

“To be a mother is to nourish and protect true humanity and bring it to development.” — Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), The Significance of Woman’s Intrinsic Value in National Life

“To celebrate the Gospel of life means to celebrate the God of life, the God who gives life… In every child which is born and in every person who lives or dies we see the image of God's glory. We celebrate this glory in every human being, a sign of the living God, an icon of Jesus Christ.” - The Gospel of Life, 84

“God creates every person for eternal union with Himself and continually invites us to embrace a loving relationship with Him. Every person is chosen.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities 2018-19 Respect Life Reflection
