House Bill 952

Access to Abortion Care & Health Insurance Act

HB 952 establishes certain requirements regarding abortion care services, including provision and coverage requirements on the Maryland Medical Assistance Program and certain insurers, nonprofit health service plans, and health maintenance organizations.

Expanding insurance coverage for abortion without providing alternatives is reproductive coercion.  This type of bill rejects the self-determination and bodily autonomy of women, especially low-income women, immigrants, and women of color.  Maryland women want support to be able to achieve their dreams and raise their children. It is not more abortion that Maryland needs, but a clear understanding of the diverse demographic in our state and support and resources for growing families.

House Bill 1171

Declaration of Rights – Right to Reproductive Liberty

HB 1171 would establish a fundamental right to reproductive liberty and would enshrine abortion, at any stage, into our State Constitution. We believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and all life should be protected and respected from conception to natural death.

There is no need for this Constitutional amendment; unfortunately, Maryland currently has one of the highest rates of abortion in the country and there is no lack or risk of access to abortion.  As a society we are broken when a response to any pregnancy is fear rather than joy.  We must do better as a society to walk with mothers in need and help break down economic, social, racial, employment and emotional barriers that lead mothers into thinking abortion is the only option.

House Bill 937 and Senate Bill 890

Abortion Care Access Act

HB 937/SB 890 establish the Abortion Clinical Care Training Program in the Maryland Department of Health and makes substantial changes regarding the requirements related to who my perform abortion is the State by taking away the requirement that a physician perform the abortion and now stating that any “qualified provider” may provide abortions in Maryland.

Given that abortion is ubiquitous in our state, Maryland women are not looking for abortion expansion but rather help with basic necessities they need to survive and thrive.  National polling indicates that a majority of low-income women identify as prolife and 75% of Latinos and African Americans support abortion restrictions.  Women and girls in Maryland deserve better.

House Bill 626 and Senate Bill 669

Pregnant Persons Freedom Act

This legislation would add language to Maryland statute stating that, “A PERSON IS NOT SUBJECT TO CRIMINAL PENALTIES OR CIVIL DAMAGES FOR AIDING, INFORMING, OR IN ANY WAY ASSISTING A PREGNANT PERSON IN TERMINATING OR SEEKING TO TERMINATE THE PERSON’S PREGNANCY.”

Under current law, post-viability abortions would only be protected if they were performed for the health of the mother or fetal abnormality. This new language would allow a doctor to perform a late-term abortion for any reason and not be held responsible.
